ATLAS GAMES RECAP
On June 21st - 23rd 2024, athletes from CrossFit Barrie competed at the Atlas Games in Niagara Falls, Ontario. They completed 6 workouts over 3 days.
We asked our athletes to tell us their biggest takeaway from the weekend, read below and enjoy!
Emily Johnson - Women’s Intermediate Division:
“My biggest takeaway from the weekend would be to worry less about what everyone else is doing and focus more on enjoying the moment and enjoying my own personal wins. I really tried to focus this weekend on having fun instead of stressing out about results or how I was doing compared to the other women in my division as I used to do quite a bit at comps, and it made the weekend a million times more fun!
I honestly feel that I performed better this weekend than I thought I would because I wasn’t putting so much pressure on myself.
Happy to have had a blast with the CrossFit Barrie Fam this weekend!”
Miranda Hammond - Women’s Intermediate Division:
“I signed up for Atlas Games in order to push myself out of my comfort zone as this was my first individual competition. I knew going in that I would be held back by my brain and anxieties / nerves so this was a good first test of pushing my mental limits. The biggest takeaway and learning point for me is to stop putting so much pressure on myself because when I do, my physical abilities get over run by my mental blocks. Overall, I’ve always known that my brain limits me from a lot, but hopefully doing more and more of these competitions and pushing myself out of my comfort zone my mental toughness will improve.”
David Doering - Men’s Masters Division 50-54:
“1. Nutrition is huge. Carbs around each workout and lots of electrolytes after. Choke back food if necessary. This was key for me personally as I feel I recovered well and was prepared each day.
2. Post workout bike or moving with stretching. I did this and felt great!
3. Have a game plan about each workout that fits your own strength and weaknesses. Understand what the workout is really about and attack it that way. I.e. - I was slow on the wall balls and burpee workout but knew I could have some stamina for thrusters so didn’t rush to keep up with other guys.
4. Now I will work on weaknesses before my next comp in September. Lose some tonnage and work on engine, pull ups, chest to bar, toes to bar and gymnastics that I’m weak at.
5. Don’t piss off your girl coach morning of last day of comp! haha”
Nani Ourique - Men’s RX Division:
“I write this having been in the sport for over a decade and I can safely say the weekend that just passed has shown me, some time and skin in the game has made me a more mature athlete. I’ve learned that I can only control myself, my actions and my attitude. Not every waking moment of the weekend was perfect…but it equally was, in that it taught me how to not dwell on mistakes, but equally not over celebrate the wins. It taught me to truly enjoy each moment I had, it taught me to stay present and focus on the task at hand. Now that it has been a few days I can calmly look back and get excited about what I need to improve on versus being upset about any performance that I think wasn’t good enough. All in all, I’ve learned to surrender to the outcomes, and love the process!”
